Organ Shape: Controlling Oriented Cell Division
نویسنده
چکیده
One mechanism by which organisms control the shape of growing organs is by regulating the orientation of cell divisions. This occurs in the Drosophila wing under the control of genes previously implicated in regulating cell polarity.

The Orientation of Cell Divisions Determines the Shape of Drosophila Organs
Organ shape depends on the coordination between cell proliferation and the spatial arrangement of cells during development. Much is known about the mechanisms that regulate cell proliferation, but the processes by which the cells are orderly distributed remain unknown. This can be accomplished either by random division of cells that later migrate locally to new positions (cell allocation) or th...
متن کاملNatural Variation Identifies Multiple Loci Controlling Petal Shape and Size in Arabidopsis thaliana
Natural variation in organ morphologies can have adaptive significance and contribute to speciation. However, the underlying allelic differences responsible for variation in organ size and shape remain poorly understood. We have utilized natural phenotypic variation in three Arabidopsis thaliana ecotypes to examine the genetic basis for quantitative variation in petal length, width, area, and s...
متن کاملHoxb1b controls oriented cell division, cell shape and microtubule dynamics in neural tube morphogenesis
Hox genes are classically ascribed to function in patterning the anterior-posterior axis of bilaterian animals; however, their role in directing molecular mechanisms underlying morphogenesis at the cellular level remains largely unstudied. We unveil a non-classical role for the zebrafish hoxb1b gene, which shares ancestral functions with mammalian Hoxa1, in controlling progenitor cell shape and...
متن کاملMechanical Forces Program the Orientation of Cell Division during Airway Tube Morphogenesis.
Oriented cell division plays a key role in controlling organogenesis. The mechanisms for regulating division orientation at the whole-organ level are only starting to become understood. By combining 3D time-lapse imaging, mouse genetics, and mathematical modeling, we find that global orientation of cell division is the result of a combination of two types of spindles with distinct spindle dynam...
متن کاملBazooka is required for localization of determinants and controlling proliferation in the sensory organ precursor cell lineage in Drosophila.
Asymmetric divisions with two different division orientations follow different polarity cues for the asymmetric segregation of determinants in the sensory organ precursor (SOP) lineage. The first asymmetric division depends on frizzled function and has the mitotic spindle of the pI cell in the epithelium oriented along the anterior-posterior axis, giving rise to pIIa and pIIb, which divide in d...
